Dr. Sabrina Ng, Ph.D.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Visiting Scholar
Email: pqn20@cam.ac.uk
A multifaceted researcher with a unique blend of expertise in plant epigenetics, RNA biology, and bioinformatics, Dr. Pei Qin (Sabrina) Ng joined the Shu Lab as a visiting scholar, enriching our team with her expertise and dedication to advancing retinal research through RNA sequencing and metabolomics.
Dr. Ng hails from Baulcombe’s group at the prestigious Department of Plant Sciences, University of Cambridge, UK. Her PhD training instilled in her a rich mix of both practical benchwork experiments and comprehensive bioinformatics analysis, epitomizing her as a truly ambidextrous bioinformatician.
During her tenure as a visiting scholar in our lab, Sabrina seamlessly melded her robust background with our research endeavors, offering invaluable insights into RNA sequencing and metabolomics. Our collaborative work dove deep into retinal research, showcasing her adaptability and enthusiasm for multidisciplinary scientific exploration.
When Sabrina is not coding or pondering about science, she loves travelling, bouldering, and is also a barista and a baker of beautiful cupcakes.
Linh Vuong
Visiting Undergraduate Scholar
Email: linh.vuong@gmx.de
Even as an undergraduate at the Technical University of Munich, Mong Linh Vuong’s enthusiasm for science is palpable and commendable. Eager to immerse herself in the intricate world of research, Linh has already begun making her mark in the lab, demonstrating both curiosity and dedication that belies her academic stage. Before joining the Shu Lab at the Department of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, she garnered invaluable experience during her notable stint at the Max Planck Institute for Immunology and Epigenetics in Freiburg, Germany, a testament to her proactive approach to learning and her genuine passion for the scientific field. Linh’s diverse experiences across global research institutions do not only speak to her dedication but also to her adaptability and drive to contribute meaningfully into our projects. As Linh continues her academic journey, her early engagements promise a bright and impactful future in research.
Alena Appiah
Visiting Scholar
Email: alenaappiah05@icloud.com
Alena Appiah is not your typical high school student. As she progresses through her final year at Arizona College Prep High School, she is concurrently making strides in her academic pursuits at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Beyond the classroom, Alena’s enthusiasm for science and research is evident. As an integral member of our lab, she has already made significant contributions to our work. In 2022, her scientific ambitions were recognized by the Ewgis Summer Research Program – Girls in STEM, where she had the privilege of being mentored by Dr. Shu. Her exemplary dedication and skill caught the attention of the American Society for Investigative Pathology (ASIP). In 2023, she was awarded the prestigious Summer Research Opportunity Program in Pathology (SROPP), further cementing her position in the Shu lab. Alena’s journey, still in its early stages, already showcases a promising trajectory in the world of scientific research. In her free time, Alena enjoys cooking and baking, playing soccer, reading, and making music.
